The mead is also full of legends... one of them tells that the "Honeymoon" comes from a tradition of medieval Europe, in which mead was essential to say goodbye to the couple after the wedding. It was used as a final toast and as the beginning of the marriage. After the wedding, the bride and groom would receive enough mead to toast for a month after their wedding, hence the term "honeymoon". MOON refers to a cycle of the moon (one month), HONEY refers to mead or wine with honey.
This delicate yet flavorful drink was not only considered the best way to start a new marriage, but was also believed to enhance such valuable qualities as fertility and virility. On numerous occasions the groom, after drinking generous amounts of mead, was carried by his friends to his bride's bedside. If nine months later, a baby appeared, credit was given to the mead.
According to the "honeymoon" tradition, when the time comes to close the festivities, the wedding party gathers around the bride and groom. Everyone fills their glasses with mead and toasts to a prosperous and happy life.
