Tropical Tartness: A Refreshing Twist on Sweet Mead with MELINIA

As the co-owner of Costa Rica Meadery, the proud producer of MELINIA, I might just have a tiny bit of bias when it comes to our creations. But, let's be honest, who wouldn't? I've always had a soft spot for all of our sweet meads, yet MELINIA holds a special place in my heart. What sets it apart for me is its delightful tartness, a playful twist that dances on the palate, distinguishing it from our other sweet offerings.

I find immense joy in sipping this mead from a cordial glass, where its vibrant flavors and aromas can truly express themselves. However, my fondness doesn't stop there. Incorporating MELINIA into a spritz cocktail elevates it to a whole new level of refreshment. It's hard to imagine a more invigorating drink to enjoy on a warm, sunny afternoon in the tropics. The combination of its tartness with the effervescence of a spritz makes it an unparalleled delight.

So, while I admit my view might be slightly colored by my role, I invite you to dive into the unique experience that is MELINIA. It's more than just a mead; it's a testament to the creativity and passion we pour into every bottle at Costa Rica Meadery. Cheers to the adventures that await in every glass!

"Melinia is our second melomel with jabuticaba. We wanted to make a honey wine that captured the essence of Jabuticaba and that its flavor was not diluted with water. That's why for Melinia we only use tropical forest honey, Jabuticaba juice and yeast. We ferment honey with the freshly pressed juice of fresh jabuticabas. Once its fermentation is complete, we age it for 15 months before being bottled. It has an exotic and assertive aroma of honey and jabuticaba. It is sweet with a bright acidity that shows a excellent balance between the components." -Alejandra Araya

THE BEST PAIRINGS WITH MELINIA

BRUSCHETTA WITH PEACH AND RICOTTA

Toasted baguette slices topped with a layer of ricotta cheese and thin slices of fresh peach can offer a delicious pairing. The softness of the ricotta and the sweetness of the peach will complement the fruity and floral notes of the mead.

CHEESEBOARD

Opt for a selection of cheeses that complement the sweetness and acidity of the mead. A blend of creamy brie, aged Manchego and a tangy blue cheese will offer a range of flavors that can enhance the complex profile of the mead. The creaminess of the brie contrasts nicely with the acidity, while the nuttiness of the Manchego and the intensity of the blue cheese can stand up to the sweetness.

ALMOND AND HONEY CAKE

A moist almond cake drizzled with honey can echo the honey used in mead, while the nuttiness of the almond adds depth. This pairing will enhance the honey and jabuticaba flavors of the mead without overloading the palate.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MELINIA

12-14°C (53.6-57.2°F)

Given the unique characteristics of MELINIA, a sweet mead with vibrant, fresh notes of jabuticaba fruit and rainforest honey, and its comparison to Spanish sherries and late harvest wines, the ideal serving temperature is slightly nuanced. Meads, like wines, have their flavors and aromas significantly influenced by temperature. For MELINIA, which boasts a complex balance of sweetness, acidity and fruit flavors, you would want to highlight its exquisite balance and aromatic profile.

Recommended Serving Temperature

I recommend serving MELINIA in a temperature range of 12-14°C (53.6-57.2°F) . This temperature range is slightly cooler than room temperature, which helps refresh the palate, especially given its sweet and tart profile. However, it is warm enough to ensure that the intricate flavors and aromas, particularly the exotic notes of jabuticaba and the richness of rainforest honey, are not dulled.

Why this temperature?

  • Enhances Aromatics : Cooler temperatures can suppress the volatility of some aromatic compounds. Serving MELINIA slightly chilled ensures that its vibrant, fresh aromas are front and center without being too muted.
  • Balances Sweetness and Acidity : Sweet wines, including meads, can feel overly syrupy if served too warm. A cooler serving temperature helps maintain a refreshing balance between the sweetness of the honey and the acidity of the jabuticaba.
  • Improves Drinkability : Meads with a higher alcohol content, such as MELINIA at 13.0% alc./vol., may feel more balanced and less alcoholic when served at a cooler temperature, improving the overall drinking experience.

Tips for Serving

  • If MELINIA has been stored in a cool cellar or refrigerator, allow it to sit at room temperature for a short period before serving to gently reach the recommended temperature.
  • Consider the service environment; If it's a warm day or the room is particularly hot, you could serve MELINIA a little colder to compensate for the rise in room temperature while it's in the glass.

By serving MELINIA at this recommended temperature, you will be able to fully appreciate its unique and complex profile, making it an enjoyable experience for connoisseurs and casual drinkers alike.

Recommended Glassware: White Wine Glass

To serve MELINIA, a sweet mead with a complex profile of vibrant jabuticaba fruit and rainforest honey, the choice of glassware is crucial to enhance its aromatic and flavor profiles. Based on my experience and considering the unique characteristics of MELINIA, I recommend the following glassware:

A glass of white wine is ideal for serving MELINIA for several reasons:

  • Shape : The slightly narrow mouth of a white wine glass helps concentrate and deliver the aromatic compounds of the mead directly to the nose, enhancing the olfactory experience. This is particularly important for MELINIA, given its exotic and assertive aromas of honey and jabuticaba.
  • Size : The bowl size of a white wine glass is perfect for allowing the mead to breathe without being so large that it disperses its delicate aromas too quickly. This balance ensures that each sip is as aromatic as the first.
  • Stem : The stem allows the drinker to hold the glass without affecting the temperature of the mead. Given the recommended service temperature of 12-14°C (53.6-57.2°F), it is important to minimize hand heating.

Alternative Option: Tulip Cup

If a white wine glass is not available, a tulip glass is a suitable alternative. Its design, with a wider bowl that tapers towards the opening, also effectively concentrates aromas. This glass is often used for certain types of beer and sparkling wines, making it versatile in capturing the effervescence and aromatic profile of MELINIA.

Service Considerations

  • Pouring : Pour the mead gently to avoid excessive aeration, which can lead to rapid dissipation of its aromatic compounds. A moderate pour also allows for proper evaluation of the color and clarity of the mead.
  • Volume : Fill the glass only up to a third of its capacity. This allows enough space for the aromas to accumulate within the glass and for the drinker to stir the mead, enhancing the olfactory experience without the risk of spills.

By selecting the right glassware and considering these serving subtleties, you can significantly enhance the enjoyment of MELINIA, allowing its unique flavors and aromas to shine. This attention to detail ensures that the serving experience complements the quality and character of the mead.

Storing MELINIA, or any quality mead, properly before and after opening is crucial to preserving its quality, flavors and aromas. Here are my recommendations based on my experience:

Before opening

  1. Temperature : Store MELINIA in a cool, dark place where the temperature is constant. Ideal storage temperatures for mead are between 10°C and 15°C (50°F and 59°F). Avoid locations with significant temperature fluctuations, as this can cause expansion and contraction of the mead, potentially compromising the seal or affecting its aging process.
  2. Position : Keep the bottle horizontal. This is particularly important for corked meads, as it keeps the cork moist, preventing it from drying out and shrinking, which could allow air into the bottle and spoil the mead.
  3. Light : Protect MELINIA from direct sunlight and strong artificial lights, as UV rays can degrade and prematurely age the mead. A dark closet, wine cellar or wine refrigerator is ideal.

After Open

  1. Re-cap : If you don't finish the bottle, recap it tightly. If the original cork doesn't fit well, use a wine stopper designed to seal open bottles.
  2. Refrigeration : Once opened, refrigerate the mead. The cold temperature slows down the oxidation processes and helps preserve the flavors and aromas of the mead for a little longer.
  3. Consumption Time : Ideally, consume opened mead within a few days, up to a week. Even when recapped and refrigerated, the mead will gradually begin to lose its character and freshness.
  4. Observation : Keep an eye out for any changes in the appearance, smell, or taste of the mead. If it begins to develop off-flavors, oxidizes too much, or shows signs of deterioration, it is best to discard it.

By following these storage guidelines, you can help ensure that MELINIA is enjoyed at its best, both before and after opening. Proper storage not only preserves quality, but also allows you to appreciate the full range of flavors and aromas intended by the mead maker.

The shelf life of MELINIA, a sweet mead made with jabuticaba fruit and rainforest honey, can be quite long, thanks to the preservative properties of both alcohol and honey. Given its profile and assuming it has been stored correctly (in a cool, dark place, with a stable temperature), MELINIA may have significant aging potential.

Unopened

  • Short to Medium Term : Even shortly after bottling, MELINIA should already present a complex and enjoyable profile due to its fermentation and aging process described by the mead manufacturer. However, its flavors and aromas will continue to evolve and mature over time.
  • Long Term : Given its 13.0% alcohol content and the natural preservative qualities of honey, MELINIA may improve with age for several years. High-quality meads can age gracefully for 5, 10, or even more years under optimal conditions. The evolution will depend on several factors, including the details of its production, the initial balance of flavors and storage conditions.

Open

Once opened, the shelf life of MELINIA is significantly decreased due to exposure to air, which can lead to oxidation. It is best consumed within:

  • A Few Days to a Week : Ideally, consume an opened bottle of MELINIA within a week, keeping it re-corked and refrigerated when not in use to slow the oxidation process.

Considerations

  • Storage Conditions : The key to maximizing the shelf life and aging potential of MELINIA lies in its storage conditions. Fluctuations in temperature and light exposure can accelerate aging and potentially spoil the mead.
  • Personal Preference : Some enthusiasts may prefer the fresher, more vibrant flavors present in younger meads, while others may appreciate the deeper, more complex profiles that develop with age. It's worth experimenting with aging to find your preferred balance.

In short, MELINIA has the potential for a long shelf life and can develop more nuanced flavors and aromas over time if stored properly. However, once opened, it should be enjoyed relatively quickly to appreciate its quality at its best.
