What is Et Tu Brute?

Et Tu Brute is a sparkling mead made by the Costa Rica Meadery in Santa Barbara de Heredia, Costa Rica. It is produced in small batches and uses a special honey from the tropical forest to produce its unique flavor.

But what is mead? An alcoholic drink made from honey. Wine is produced with grapes, beer with grains, cider with apples and mead with honey. To start the fermentation process, mead makers mix honey with water to create a friendly environment for yeast. After adding the yeast, it begins to consume the sugars, turning the honey and water mixture into an alcoholic drink.

The phrase "honeymoon" alludes to the use of mead during the first month of marriage. The Celts gave the newly married couple enough mead to drink during the first month of marriage.

Being made from honey, mead is believed to be full of health properties and is also said to increase fertility.

How is Et Tu Brute different from other sparkling wines?

Et Tu Brute is a sparkling mead, fermented from honey. The use of honey as a source of fermentable sugars makes mead one of the most environmentally sustainable beverages on the planet. The making of mead, unlike beers or wine, does not depend on agriculture. But from a forest with many flowers to produce honey. The honey with which Et Tu Brute is made comes directly from the tropical forest of Costa Rica. While mead has no clinically proven health benefits, mead is considered by some to be healthier than beer and wine because it's made with honey, which is easier for the body to metabolize, and you get the nutritional benefits of the honey itself. Honey has natural antiseptic and antibacterial qualities.

When it comes to flavor, you'll notice that Et Tu Brute has a bright, fruity flavor, unlike champagne and other sparkling wines that tend to be drier and toastier. This will cause the Et Tu Brute pairing to be slightly different than the Champagne pairing.

Finally, Et Tu Brute is much less expensive than other sparkling wines, including champagne. The reason behind the lower cost? It is that you can purchase the product directly from the producer, Costa Rica Meadery, eliminating the high margins charged by importers, distributors and wholesalers. Not to mention that, being a local product, we do not leave a carbon footprint by importing or exporting raw materials from other countries.

What ingredients are in Et Tu Brute?

Et Tu Brute is made with a mixture of different varieties of honey and passion fruit juice. 60% of the honey is multifloral honey collected from the tropical forest, which imparts a medium acidity. The remaining 40% of the honey is nectar collected from the flowers of the botarrama tree. Which imparts a pleasant bitterness.

The honey and fruit are mixed with filtered water from the Barva Volcano aquifer and fermented with selected yeast strains that bring out the special flavors of Et Tu Brute.
